Specifically, he mentioned the measure to toughen penalties for crimes related to organized crime, as he stated that “certain legislators seek to include other issues in the process of the legal reforms that the Executive will propose.”
This is in reference to a recent bill to reform the Ecuadorian penal code, which was paralyzed after consensus was broken in the Assembly by introducing Citizen revolutionthe political formation of the former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), points that other groups considered could open the door to a review of the former president’s sentence.
The vice minister recalled that an overwhelming majority voted for ‘Yes’ on the questions related to the toughening of sentences, the fulfillment of the entire sentence for certain crimes, the classification of the crime of carrying weapons for the exclusive use of law enforcement forces. , and the delivery of confiscated weapons to the National Police and to the Armed forces.
In this sense, Torres highlighted that the consultation constitutes an express process to address these issues within a maximum period of 60 days, for which the President of the Republic, Daniel Noboa, must send the corresponding bills to the Assembly.
