Ecuador will continue to buy vaccines after December to be prepared for the inoculation of a third dose to the population that requires it, Vice President Alfredo Borrero said Tuesday.
In statements to the news portal Un Café con JJ, he affirmed that until December the government expects to receive 32 million vaccines that are already negotiated but that “we are going to continue negotiating vaccines … and we will start the third vaccine process a little more relieved, no longer with the emergency in which we have all been involved ”.
He stressed that if the scientific evidence and “the reality is that we need to administer the third dose, we are going to do it,” starting with people over 60 with previous illnesses.
He added that herd immunity in Ecuador will be achieved when 12 million citizens have received the two doses and confirmed that in the next 10 days the initial goal of immunizing nine million citizens with both doses will be met.
In his political campaign, President Guillermo Lasso, who took office in May, promised to vaccinate nine million people in his first 100 days in office.
So far 9.66 million people have one dose and 6.87 million with both of a total of 17.3 million inhabitants.
Since the start of the pandemic in Ecuador, almost half a million infected and more than 32,000 deaths have been registered.
