MADRID, 7 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, has urged the Mexican authorities to enter into negotiations to facilitate the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who is staying at the Mexican Embassy in Quito while the Prosecutor’s Office requests his arrest.
«It is better that, at this moment in which there has been a lot of interpretation with particular visions and not with a general perspective, that a lot of noise has been caused around a sensitive issue, there is no more speculation and work is done in the channels that must be work, which is in bilateral dialogue tables,” he said.
Thus, Sommerfeld has stressed that although “each country has its position (…) this does not mean that when there is a difference, diplomacy breaks down.” “When there are differences, that is precisely where the dialogue table is and we maintain permanent communication,” added the minister, according to the El Telégrafo portal.
Questioned about the whereabouts of former Vice President Glas, the person in charge of Ecuadorian diplomacy has asserted that the former ‘number two’ of Rafael Correa and Lenín Moreno “of course” is still staying at the Mexican Embassy despite Quito’s request to enter the building and arrest him.
For her part, the Mexican ambassador in Ecuador, Raquel Serur, has also addressed this issue and has asserted that bilateral relations between Mexico City and Quito are strong, and that the authorities of both countries currently maintain dialogues and talks.
At the beginning of the month, Ecuadorian authorities requested permission from the Mexican Embassy in Quito for security forces to enter the building in order to comply with the arrest warrant issued against former Vice President Glas, accused of a corruption plot.
Glas has remained at the Mexican diplomatic headquarters since mid-December, where he entered citing fear for his safety and personal freedom. The Embassy welcomed him as a guest and his lawyers have already reported that they have submitted a formal request for political asylum.
This maneuver by the former vice president occurs after the National Police ordered his arrest to give a statement to the Prosecutor’s Office in the case of possible embezzlement of public funds in the reconstruction of the province of Manabí after the 2016 earthquake, which left more than 670 dead. .
