Mexico City. The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office received a complaint against the Mexican diplomat Roberto Canseco for the alleged crime of obstruction of justice.
Canseco was in charge of the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5 when the Ecuadorian police stormed the building, as ambassador Raquel Serur had been declared persona non grata by the Ecuadorian government, which had ordered her expulsion from the country.
Head of the Embassy’s Chancellery, Canseco tried to prevent the assault on the Mexican Embassy and the arrest of former Ecuadorian president Jorge Glas, who was taking refuge in the building.
Ecuadorian media reported this Wednesday that the Prosecutor’s Office received an accusation against Canseco and opened an investigation file.
The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement in which it stated that Canseco enjoys diplomatic immunity, so the institution does not have investigative powers in this case.
It added that it received a complaint against Canseco and that by law it is obliged to process it, but that since it does not have the power to investigate the Mexican diplomat, “it has been arranged that – through the Directorate of International Affairs – said news of the crime will be inform” the Mexican government.
