In Ecuador, about 3,500 kilos of cocaine were found in two containers with bananas destined for Europe. One of the containers was to be shipped to Rotterdam. The other to Great Britain. Police in the South American country reported this on Twitter on Saturday. Someone was arrested.
A container truck was intercepted on the way to the port of the city of Guayaquil. It contained 92 boxes containing a total of 2,300 packages of around one kilogram of cocaine each. A second container was found in another port in the region. This shipment contained 87 boxes containing 1,218 packages of coke.
The day before, the police in Ecuador also made a major drug discovery. An unknown quantity of the drug was found in 4,800 boxes of tuna in an apartment in the coastal resort of Manta. The cans were intended for export.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele tweeted Friday that the Navy had intercepted a smuggling ship carrying 2.2 tons of coke into the Pacific Ocean. The value is estimated at over 55 million dollars (approximately 54.8 million euros). The arrested crew consisted of an Ecuadorian and two Colombians.
Boats smuggling cocaine from South America to the United States are often intercepted off the coast of Central America.
