Ecuador: Elected officials question the treatment reserved for the vice-president

Havana, September 26 – Several members of the Ecuadorian National Assembly questioned on Tuesday the government’s treatment of Vice President Veronica Abad, in the midst of a conflict between the main heads of the executive branch.

This Tuesday, the National Assembly was to analyze a letter sent by Veronica Abad to the President of the Assembly, Henry Kronfle, in which she requests the opening of an audit process against the Minister of Labor Ivonne Núñez and the head of Ecuadorian diplomacy, Gabriela Sommerfeld. However, the session was suspended. Earlier, Citizens’ Revolution (RC) lawmaker Blasco Luna said Ms. Nuñez and Ms. Sommerfeld should be summoned before legislative committees to explain the treatment of Vice President Abad.

“Like it or not, she is vice president, they cannot use administrative action to remove her from office when she was elected as President Daniel Noboa’s running mate,” he said .

For his part, the legislator of the Construye movement, Paul Buestan, questioned the way in which state ministries “lend themselves to violating the law and accommodating procedures for the benefit of President Noboa, leaving aside legal certainty “.

Likewise, independent assembly member Lucia Posso reiterated that the government is desperate to prevent, by all means, Abad from assuming the presidency when Noboa begins his campaign for the 2025 elections. (Text and photo: RHC)
