MADRID, 1 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ecuadorian authorities have asked the Mexican Embassy in Quito that the security forces enter the diplomatic headquarters and be able to comply with the arrest order against former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas ordered by the National Court of Justice.

The day before, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the Mexican Embassy, reported this Friday by the local press, in which they point out that this request is made at the request of the Ministry of the Interior.

«The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility requests the consent of the head of the Mexican diplomatic mission so that the forces of order, which depend on the Ministry of the Interior, enter the premises of the mission and carry out the capture of Mr. Jorge David Glas », reads the writing.

The letter also refers to the conversations held last December between Ecuadorian diplomacy and the Mexican Embassy, where the Ecuadorian authorities released “the information provided by the National Court of Justice and the State Attorney General’s Office.” .

For his part, former Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa has criticized the current government’s maneuvers to remove his vice president during his second term from Mexican diplomatic facilities.

Thus, he has indicated that Foreign Affairs has believed that the Mexican president, Andrés López Obrador, is the former Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno, whom he has called a “traitor to the country”, recalling how he allowed the British Police to enter the Ecuadorian Embassy. in London to arrest the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange.

Glas has been staying at the Mexican Embassy in Quito since mid-December, where he entered citing fear for his safety and personal freedom. The diplomatic mission welcomed him as a guest and his lawyers have already reported that they have submitted the formal request for political asylum and refuge.

This maneuver by the former vice president of Ecuador between 2013 and 2018 during the mandates of Rafael Correa and Lenín Moreno occurs after the National Police ordered his arrest to give a statement before the Prosecutor’s Office in the case of possible embezzlement of public funds in the reconstruction of Manabí after the 2016 earthquake.

The province of Manabí, in western Ecuador, was the scene of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2016. Authorities confirmed the death of more than 670 people and thousands of injuries.
