ECOWAS Ultimatum Expires as Niger Junta Closes Airspace

Representatives of the junta that carried out a military coup in the West African country of Niger have closed the country’s airspace, as the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) to the junta expired at midnight on Monday.

On Friday, ECOWAS defense ministers announced after a meeting that they had agreed on a plan for military intervention. But on Saturday, the junta led by the former head of Niger’s presidential guard, General Abdurahman Chiani, continued its bid to seize power, announcing that people linked to the armed forces were being appointed to key government posts.
