ECOWAS Community United Against Military Junta in Niger: Last Chance for Coup Plotters

A group of West African countries, united within the ECOWAS community, want to give the military junta in Niger one last chance. This weekend it hopes to force the coup plotters to relinquish power. If that fails, the group has already decided when to start a military intervention, says ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah.

The D-day for a military intervention has already been set, although Musah does not indicate when it will take place. He does say that it would be a “short intervention” to “restore constitutional order in the country”.

The Commissioner also said that “the military option is not the preferred option, but there is no other choice given the intransigence of the military junta in Niger.”

The military leaders of the group of West African countries have been meeting in Ghana for the past two days. They are looking for a solution to the coup in their region.

At the end of July, the president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, was ousted. Earlier this month, ECOWAS also threatened military intervention, but despite an expiring deadline, the countries have not yet acted.
