Ecosystem – bathing water quality: First place for Austria in the EU ranking

In the latest report by the EU Commission on the quality of bathing water in Europe, Austria takes first place. Of a total of 261 domestic bathing areas examined, 97.7 percent were classified as “excellent” – more than in all other EU countries as well as Albania and Switzerland. Malta is in second place, while the bathing spots of Greece and Croatia are in third place.

A total of 99.2 percent of all domestic bodies of water were rated “excellent” or “good” in the EU report. This puts Austria at the top of the 29 countries that comply with the requirements of the Bathing Water Directive. In total, European bathing water was examined at almost 22,000 measuring points.

“The great result is confirmation that our measures and investments of the last decades in the amount of 50 billion euros to keep the water clean are having an effect,” said Federal Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) on the occasion of the current ranking. “Just in time for the start of the summer bathing and holiday season, guests from near and far can be sure: the quality of our local natural bathing waters is excellent”.
