Ecopower Implements Flat Rate for Solar Panel Customers with Reversing Meter

From January 1, electricity supplier Ecopower will charge a flat rate for customers with solar panels and an analogue, reversing meter. The electricity supplier announced the change to its customers on Thursday. Ecopower expects the same evolution from other suppliers.

Ecopower will charge customers 42 euros per kVA of inverter power per year, excluding VAT, for the ‘flat rate reversing meter’. “This flat rate will not be charged to protected customers,” it said.

“The costs are a result of the price difference between the injection and the purchase,” says Ecopower. “When people inject electricity, market prices are usually low because there is a large supply of solar power. When they decrease, the electricity is more expensive due to higher demand and lower supply. The analog meter turns backwards and looks at the net power consumption on an annual basis, without taking into account the moment of injection or consumption. This means that the actual costs are not reflected in the invoice. There were market agreements with all suppliers until the end of 2023 and these costs were spread over all Belgian customers. From 2024 this will no longer be the case and we will pass on the costs. We also expect this logical evolution from other suppliers.”

Ecopower, which introduced a temporary customer stop, will also reduce the price for purchase and injection from January 1 for customers with a contract for ‘green citizen electricity’. Ecopower is lowering the fixed part of the price formula for ‘green citizen electricity’, which accounts for half the price. The other part varies every month and is linked to Belgian market prices.
