First company visit after corona easing – shortage of raw materials and staff are becoming a challenge

District of Passau. District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger made his first visit to the company after the end of most of the corona restrictions as part of the series “District Administrator meets Economy”. Kneidinger was a guest at JELBA GmbH & Co. KG tool and mechanical engineering in Hauzenberg together with representatives from business development at the district office, the employment agency, the chamber of industry and commerce and Hauzenberg’s mayor Gudrun Donaubauer. The managing directors Alois Jellbauer and Wolfgang Bauer as well as the co-founder of the company, Josef Bauer, spoke of a good order situation but also of ongoing problems in finding personnel. They also fear difficulties in the supply of steel raw materials as a result of the Ukraine war.

District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger spoke of JELBA GmbH as a flagship for the economic region. This is an example of the importance of medium-sized companies for the district and the entire region. In 2020, JELBA GmbH was the winner of the “Bavaria’s Best 50”. Every year, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs honors the 50 fastest growing medium-sized companies in Bavaria with this award. JELBA currently employs around 260 people and is training 15 junior staff. In the coming training year, ten new trainees will start at the Hauzenberg company.

JELBA tools and mechanical engineering specializes in the machining of metal components, welding, but also the manufacture of complete systems including hydraulics, pneumatics and electrics. Among other things, JELBA also processes parts for wind turbines and manufactures components for military vehicles such as tanks.

The shortage of skilled workers is also one of the greatest challenges for the Hauzenberg company. It is no longer possible to fill all vacancies with appropriately qualified personnel. The district also wants to support this. With the “Passau Economic Region” funding project, the district promotes the region in order to attract as many skilled workers as possible to the Passau region. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the employment agency want to advertise more in schools for apprenticeships. At the same time, the managing directors would like the legislator to provide more practicable regulations for legal requirements in some places, faster digitization and uniform standards for digital data exchange.

District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger and Mayor Gudrun Donaubauer expressed their gratitude for the open exchange. Above all, it is about appreciating the domestic economy, said Donaubauer with regard to current problems in global trade. “Talking to local companies is important,” says Raimund Kneidinger, “because they make our region strong and worth living in. As a district, we support where we can and pass on the suggestions of our companies to federal and state politicians in order to create the best possible conditions for our companies.
