The new company that will import the SAIC brands – MG and Maxus – is called Quantum Auto Max SRL and was registered in the summer of this year. Owned by Dan Chitaru – who also controls Kia Romauto, the importer of Kia in Romania – and George Damian, this company will manage the activity of a network that already includes around 30 dealers.
Although they have not yet officially announced the debut of importing SAIC brands, Quantum Auto Max officials are expected to do so in the coming weeks, by the end of the year.
If there is not much to say about the Maxus brand, which has both commercial vehicles and passenger cars in its portfolio – especially the first electric pick-up sold in Europe, the T90 EV – some clarifications are needed about the former British brand MG. This is because some of those involved in the car trade believe that the speed with which MG is conquering the European market resembles the “explosion” of Dacia in recent years. Even the “recipe” seems similar. What is certain is that the old British brand, now owned by the Chinese, has arrived, out of nowhere, among the top 20 brands in the sales ranking. Over brands like Volvo, Mazda, or Suzuki.
More precisely, in the first six months of this year, the well-known British brand that was on the verge of extinction before being bought by the Chinese sold no less than 104,293 cars in Europe. Then in September, JATO data shows MG climbing to 18th place. In the ninth month of the year alone, it managed to attract 26,548 customers.
At the same time, the electric version of the MG4, which after the first six months of 2023 was in 6th place in the sales ranking of the segment, rose in September to 2nd place, just one step behind the leader Tesla Model Y.
Beyond the achievements of the reborn MG brand, it should be noted that the brand’s portfolio on the Romanian market will most likely include the same models already available in neighboring countries such as Hungary. This includes the MG ZS in both the thermal engine and the electric version, the new MG HS, but also the MG4 and MG5 electrics. In the not-too-distant future, the MG Marvel electric models and, above all, the spectacular MG Cyberster roadster are also expected.
The price list for the Romanian market is not yet available, but it is expected that the entire range of models will have very competitive prices, which is also the reason why its growth has been extremely fast in the Western European markets.
