Economic Recovery in Province of Ourense: Lowest Unemployment since 2008

The province of Ourense continues on a labor honeymoon, in line with the rest of Galicia and Spain, and according to the Active Population Survey (EPA) published yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the second quarter ended with the lowest number of unemployed since 2008, returning, therefore, to figures that were not seen before the outbreak of the economic crisis. And it is clear what the drivers of employment in Ourense are.

According to the second EPA of the year, Ourense closed June with a rate of 9.05% of unemployed, much lower than the 11.4% of the first quarter and the 10.84% registered just a year ago. In the last quarter, unemployed people in Ourense have decreased by 2,700 and in the last year they have fallen by 2,400. In total, there are 11,900 people from Ourense who are still looking for work, compared to the 14,600 at the end of the first quarter of the year and the 14,300 12 months ago. Since 2008, such a low number of unemployed has not been recorded.

Without going too far, 10 years ago, in 2013, this same second quarter had closed with 33,800 unemployed, 22,000 more people are unemployed than there are right now. A whole abyss that puts black on white the labor recovery that the province is experiencing.

The number of employed people, which has broken its historical record in Spain by surpassing the barrier of 21 million workers for the first time, does not reach maximum figures in the province, but has skyrocketed, marking the highest figure since 2012. It closed this quarter with 119,800 employed, 6,600 more than in the previous quarter – the largest quarter-on-quarter increase since records began – and 2,700 more than a year ago.

By sectors, services, with the arrival of summer, have a strong pull in employment, which brings together a total of 87,200 employed people (+1,100 in the last year), while industry (17,400, +700) and agriculture (6,500, + 1,000) also grow. Construction, on the other hand, remains with 8,700 workers (-500 compared to 2022).

The unions expressed their satisfaction with the data. From Comisiones Obreras Ourense, its general secretary, Ana Barrio, highlighted the “positive effects” of the labor reform and other agreements that are “consolidating labor stability.” In this sense, she highlights that the average permanent hiring went from 5.9% to 29.1% since the new regulations came into force, with temporary hiring falling from 94.1% to 65%. In any case, Barrios criticizes that women see improvements in employment “always at a rate less than two households”, since for women the unemployment rate is 9.2% while for men it is 8.9%. %. The occupancy rate is 46.8% for men and 43.5% for women.

From UGT Ourense, Cristóbal Medeiros also highlights the effect of labor reform to create “quality employment”, but highlights that “there are still many changes” to be made in the labor market to alleviate long-term poverty or “high poverty”. labor.”
