Ecological? Audi wants to use electric cars to clean up pollution

One of the arguments used to praise electric cars is their ability to circulate without causing pollution or being kept to a minimum. Despite much discussion, this is a truth preached by many.

Audi, which already has a strong presence in this market, now wants to take this environmental protection even further. He wants his electric cars to be able to clean the air in cities and thus further reduce pollution.

An Audi project for the environment

From 2020 Audi has been developing a project to reduce pollution on roads and in cities. This is prepared together with Mann + Hummel, one of its material and equipment suppliers.

the basic idea it's very simple and intends to use the brand's electric cars to do the cleaning necessary for the success of this project. By creating a particulate filter it will be possible to capture the fine dust that escapes from the brakes and wheels and would settle on the roads.

Electric cars to stop pollution

This new component will have to be installed by Audi when the electric cars are manufactured and will be similar to a residential filter system, with the difference in its location. You should also be able to collect the particles generated by the car itself.

Audi's project involves mounting the new filter on a frame placed in front of the electric car radiator. This means it depends on minimal modifications to work on any model. The filter is controlled by an interchangeable air intake which keeps fine particles trapped.

Still no date to hit the market

The system works in two moments, the first when the car is in motion, passively filtering the air. Secondly, during charging, the fan mounted on the front of the electric car transports the ambient air through the filter.

Evaluations carried out by the Stuttgart Audi showed that a prototype of the E-Tron was able to completely filter even its own particles. The results of these tests will be re-evaluated in 2024 and this novelty is not yet expected to arrive on the market.
