ECOCE launches recycling and environmental education program at the UAM

The Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) Azcapotzalco and the private entities Ecology and Business Commitment (ECOCE) and Recovery Recycling Centers (RECUPERA) implemented an environmental education program to promote the correct separation and management of waste from PET containers and flexible packaging within of the university campus.

The recycling program that began this Thursday has an impact on more than 15 thousand students and more than 3 thousand people, including teachers and workers at the Azcapotzalco campus during this year.

To recover plastic waste, containers made with recycled flexible packaging will be placed and in them, the university community will be able to deposit their containers and packaging. They will later be channeled for recycling through the company Recover, to ensure their traceability and recycling.

The signing of the agreement took place at the UAM Azcapotzalco facilities and Yadira Zavala Osorio, rector of the UAM Azcapotzalco, was present; Sylvie Turpin Marion, professor-researcher at the UAM Department of Energy; Jorge Terrazas Ornelas, general director of ECOCE, and Edgar Báez, general director of the Recover recycling centers, in addition to other authorities of the educational institution, this was reported by the entities through a joint statement.

Key actions:

  • Internal communication campaigns will be implemented to raise awareness among the student community about proper waste management and to inform the benefits derived from its separation and recycling.

  • Placement on the campus of special containers made with recycled flexible packaging, to correctly separate waste from PET containers and flexible packaging.

  • The channeling of all waste generated at the University, with the technology and logistics that guarantee its correct traceability and recycling.

  • The right to participate in virtual seminars carried out by ECOCE.

“We are very pleased to join forces with the UAM in this project, which for ECOCE implies one more step towards sustainability in Mexico. We have implemented various education and collection actions at the national level, and little by little we are moving towards our goals for 2030,” said Rodrigo Nechyba, director of PET and Operations at ECOCE, AC.

He added that today in Mexico 63 percent of PET containers are already recovered, and “without a doubt, this agreement will add positively to future results,” he noted.

It was indicated that at the end of one year, ECOCE will deliver to the UAM Azcapotzalco a record of the environmental benefits derived from recycling the waste that managed to be collected, such as savings in water and energy, as well as the amount of CO2 that was left. to emit into the atmosphere.
