The International Railroad Technology Industry Exhibition held at BEXCO in Busan last June.
It was selected as a national project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the real thing was revealed for the first time in about two years after Hyundai Rotem started developing a ‘hydrogen electric tram’.
True to its nickname of eco-friendly railway, it purifies about 800 micrograms of fine dust per hour of operation and generates 107.6 kg of clean air.
This hydrogen-powered tram is going into test operation in Ulsan ahead of commercialization.
As early as next month, the optimal driving method will be verified by going back and forth for 2,500 km by the end of the year using the existing track of about 4 km from Ulsan Port Station to Taehwagang Station.
Two bus stops, a hydrogen filling station, and a boarding area will be built, and hydrogen infrastructure such as a hydrogen pipe network will also be used.
Meanwhile, a policy evaluation was conducted by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in relation to the re-examination of the feasibility of the Ulsan Urban Railway, a long-cherished project of Ulsan.
Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, who appeared as a presenter, emphasized that the world’s first hydrogen tram is operating in Ulsan, the only metropolitan city without a subway.
Although it is a demonstration project, attention is focusing on whether it will lead to positive results as the hydrogen-powered tram runs in Ulsan.
