A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire umbral shadow of the earth falls over the moon, so that the sun, earth and moon are exactly aligned.
Researcher from the Space Research Center, BRIN Aeronautics and Space Research Organization, Farahhati Mumtangana, conveyed several astronomical phenomena that will occur during 2024. Two of them are lunar and solar eclipses which will occur during the month of Ramadan 2024.
“There is also an eclipse phenomenon in 2024, but unfortunately it will not cross Indonesian territory. “However, it can be taken into consideration if you want to plan a tour or expedition to chase the eclipse,” said Farah, quoted from the BRIN website, Friday (15/3/2024).
The astronomical phenomenon that is expected to occur in the month of Ramadan 2024 is the penumbral lunar eclipse on March 24-25 2024. However, this natural phenomenon can only be observed in Europe, North/East Asia, Australia, Africa, North America, South America, the Pacific Ocean, and Antarctica.
Apart from that, Ramadan 2024 will also be decorated with a total solar eclipse (GMT) which will occur on April 8 2024. This GMT can be observed in Western Europe, North America, South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic and the Arctic.
In Islamic treasures, an eclipse is a natural phenomenon that illustrates the majesty of Allah SWT’s creation. This astronomical phenomenon is proof that the greatness of Allah SWT is real. The Prophet SAW said:
“Indeed, solar and lunar eclipses do not occur due to someone’s death or life, but they are a sign of the greatness of Allah Ta’ala. Therefore, when you see a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse, get up and pray.” (HR Bukhari-Muslim).
As mentioned in the hadith, Muslims are advised to pray when an eclipse occurs. Considering that the two eclipses in the month of Ramadan 2024 cannot be observed in Indonesia, do Indonesian Muslims need to pray the eclipse prayer or the kusufain prayer?
