ECHR: Russia is responsible for the killing of Alexander Litvinenko

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled on Tuesday that Russia was responsible for the killing of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 with radioactive polonium in London.

According to the ECtHR, it has “conclusively” determined that the murders were committed by Russian citizens Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun and is “strong enough evidence” that they acted on behalf of the Russian authorities.

The court concluded that “Russia is responsible for the assassination of Alexander Litvinenko in the United Kingdom.”

Alexander Litvinenko, who had become a critic of the Kremlin from a Russian secret service agent, died in November 2006 after drinking tea contaminated with radioactive polonium-210 in a London hotel. The investigation found that he had been killed by Russian intelligence, presumably with the consent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Britain has named two Litvinenko murder suspects who are still at large in Russia.
