ECDC Calls for Compulsory Covid Vaccination to Prevent Dose Wastage

In order to stop throwing away the doses, ECDC calls for the forcing of anti-Covid vaccination

Due to the failure of the campaign this autumn, the European authorities are asking the EU states to take measures to compel the population to get vaccinated against Covid. At the same time, the active involvement of doctors is requested for the promotion of anti-Covid vaccination. “Every effort should be made to ensure that the messengers used in risk communication activities are known and trusted,” the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said.

On the grounds that there is a sustained transmission of the Covid virus, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) asks the EU states to accelerate, by all means, the vaccination campaign against this virus.

Although almost all EU/EEA countries issued recommendations for autumn 2023 vaccination campaigns, the percentage achieved in vulnerable groups varied from 20% to a maximum of 70%. The age limits of the national recommendations start from 50-65 years, depending on the country. Other high-risk groups for which vaccination is recommended include persons aged six months and older with underlying diseases (ie, chronic respiratory, cardiovascular, liver and kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, chronic neurological disease, immunosuppression) and institutional residents long term care.

“To maximize the uptake of the Covid vaccine among target groups, countries should carefully consider the factors that have previously limited the uptake of the booster vaccine. Communication campaigns must provide clear information, through trusted people and channels for target groups. Campaigns should also include engagement with health workers, as they are trusted sources of vaccination information. Every effort should be made to ensure that the messengers used in risk communication activities are known and trusted,” says an ECDC report.

Contentment and Constraints

The European authority requires the countries of the European Union to apply the “5C diagnostic model for vaccination” (trust, complacency, constraints, collective responsibility and calculation) to promote the adoption of recommended vaccines more effectively.

At the same time, risk communication activities for the public should be implemented, including specific guidance for risk groups, health workers and carers of vulnerable groups. Key recommendations include vaccination according to national recommendations, staying at home when sick, respiratory etiquette and good hand hygiene, adequate ventilation of indoor spaces and the promotion of appropriate public health and social measures, also called non-pharmaceutical interventions, say ECDC representatives.

People at high risk of severe disease (as well as their caregivers and loved ones) should consider wearing a face mask when in crowded public spaces, ECDC believes. Also, during the current period of high community virus transmission, it is recommended that, in addition to proper hand and respiratory hygiene, staff, visitors and patients in primary and secondary care facilities wear medical face masks or respirators FFP2 in common areas of the hospital, patient rooms and other areas where patient care is provided.

Hospital admissions, only after testing

To facilitate both the management of patient admissions and the appropriate allocation of hospital rooms and beds, as well as their treatment, ECDC calls for rapid testing for early detection of Covid-19, influenza and RSV (virus respirator sincițial) and testing in general for viruses.

“Ideally, patients with confirmed respiratory viral infection or probable respiratory viral infection with confirmatory test results pending should be placed in a single room. If the number of cases exceeds the single-room capacity, patients with the same viral infection can be placed in the same room. Alternatively, healthcare workers in contact with patients should wear a medical face mask during all routine patient care. Decisions regarding the implementation of universal or targeted clinical masking should take into account the expected benefit as well as the burden on resources, staff, patients and visitors,” the report of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control further states.
