Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone still likes to give his opinion on current affairs in Formula 1, the sport that he ruled with an iron hand for so long. For example, the almost 90-year-old Briton has spoken about Sebastian Vettel, the four-time world champion who has to leave Ferrari at the end of this year.
Ecclestone, who has a good relationship with the German, thinks he knows what the 32-year-old driver from Heppenheim is up to. And that is not racing in 2021. “I talked to him a lot. Maybe he should take a year off,” says the Brit in conversation with The Standard. “To return with the rule changes in 2022. It will give him an opportunity to wait and see how F1 will change. But I think he will one day face Lewis for Mercedes.”
Reportedly, Mercedes management would be very fond of Vettel’s arrival, while team boss Toto Wolff would like to give up-and-coming talent George Russell a chance alongside six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Both Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have an expiring contract this year.
