The European Central Bank (ECB) will do everything it can to reduce inflation in the eurozone to 2 percent. ECB President Christine Lagarde said this on Friday.
“We are going to take the necessary measures to bring inflation down to 2 percent,” Lagarde said. Since July last year, the ECB has raised key interest rates seven consecutive times by a total of 3.75 percentage points. The next central bank meeting is in Frankfurt on June 15.
According to an investigation by news agency Reuters Economists expect further increases of 0.25 percentage point in June and July. Inflation in the eurozone rose slightly again in April, putting even more pressure on the ECB to take action.
Inflation in the eurozone was 7 percent on an annual basis in April, according to figures from the European statistics agency Eurostat. In March, everyday life for consumers on average became 6.9 percent more expensive than one year previously.
