EC returnees spread the coronavirus in Sweden

Earlier, the World Health Organization WHO confirmed that crowds in arenas and public transport in connection with this summer’s European Championships have contributed to the increase in cases seen in Europe.

Swedish fans were also infected when they were watching the matches on site. Among other things, two Swedes tested positive before the match against Poland. The National Board of Health and Welfare now confirms to Dagens Nyheter that they have seen a connection between the European Championships and the spread of infection.

– In several regions, we have small cluster outbreaks from returnees that can be traced to the European Football Championship. It is also something WHO has seen about the matches that have been played, that in every place there has been an increased spread of covid tracked to the matches, says the National Board of Health and Welfare’s department head Thomas Lindén to the newspaper.

Lindén describes the cases linked to the European Championships as “strikingly many”, and points out that it is the slightly more nasty variant they bring home to Sweden. Lindén, on the other hand, believes that the regions have reported that they have succeeded in identifying and stopping the transmission chains of these cases.

– But it is possible that some go under the radar and may not follow the advice to test themselves day one and day five and thus avoid detection. So this is something we have to keep an eye on, Lindén tells DN.
