With a 4:1 win in Bozen, EC Red Bull Salzburg took the lead for the first time in the final series. In front of almost 6,500 spectators, Atte Tolvanen led the Mozart city team to victory with 32 saves.
After the 1-0 home win on Saturday, Salzburg also got off to a better start on Tuesday in the Sparkasse Arena in Bozen. HCB goalie Sam Harvey was able to distinguish himself in the first minute. Mario Huber also failed when he went it alone, and the guests took the lead shortly afterwards: After a faceoff, the home side lost their assignment and suddenly Peter Schneider was alone in front of the goal. The two-time league MVP did not miss this opportunity and made it 0-1 in the sixth minute.
In the course of the first third, Bozner got stronger, but the hosts saw the first break with a narrow deficit. Only a few seconds after the restart, Dustin Gazley stormed towards Salzburg goalkeeper Tolvanen, who, as so often, had the upper hand. After that, overtime games shaped what happened on the ice. After a 2+2 penalty against Mike Dalhuisen, the Red Bulls played with great pressure but failed to score. Shortly after the outnumbered Enrico Miglioranzi failed to Tolvanen, a little later the home side had the best phase in a one-minute 5 against 3 power play – but they could not use the numerical superiority either. In the 35th minute, defender Dennis Robertson scored the second goal at the other end. The former Bozner successfully completed a 2-on-1 situation in the short Kreuzeck.
Early in the final section, Mario Huber even scored the 3-0 for the guests. In the 45th minute, the HCB fans regained hope when Ryan Culkin broke through Tolvanen’s goal barrier after several attempts. Both teams had chances as the third progressed. The home side had a few chances to get close again. But the Red Bulls defended skilfully, captain Thomas Raffl scored an empty netter to make it 4-1 with twelve seconds remaining. With this away win – by the way, Salzburg secured the championship title in Fehérvár a year ago today – head coach Matt McIlvane’s team took the lead in the final series for the first time.
