Ebola Case in Eastern Congo Takes Child’s Life

Health Minister Jean Jacques Mbungani said one case of Ebola was found in the Democratic Republic of the Eastern Congo.

It was not immediately clear whether the cases were linked to the outbreak in 2018-20 that killed more than 2,200 people in eastern Congo, or an outbreak that killed six people this year.

Reported Between, Saturday (9/10/2021) a 3-year-old boy tested positive for Ebola in the eastern city of Beni.

The boy died of Ebola on Wednesday.

About 100 people who may have been exposed to the virus have been identified and will be monitored to see if they develop symptoms, Mbungani added.

An internal report from the Congo biomedical laboratory said that three of the neighbors of the 3-year-old boy showed symptoms of Ebola last month. The three neighbors died but they have not been tested for Ebola.

“Thanks to the experience gained in managing the Ebola virus during previous epidemics, we are confident that the response team will succeed in controlling this outbreak as soon as possible,” said Mbungani.(ant/dfn/ipg)
