The NCAA Women’s Frozen Four ends on Saturday when the Northeastern Huskies’ top seeds (22-1-1) face off against the second-seeded Wisconsin Badgers (16-3-1) in the game of national championship.
Northeastern will compete for their first national championship in any sport, while Wisconsin will look to win their sixth national women’s ice hockey title, which would tie the all-time mark.
The landmark clash will feature two of the nation’s best players – senior northeast goaltender Aerin Frankel and senior Wisconsin forward Daryl Watts. Frankel and Watts are two of three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is awarded to the best female NCAA Division I ice hockey player.
Northeastern has been the hottest team in the country for the past two seasons, scoring 54 of the NCAA’s best wins (54-5-3). The Huskies are on a 22-game unbeaten streak, which included their 3-2 overtime win over 5th Minnesota Duluth in the Frozen Four semifinals. Minnesota Duluth led a 2-0 lead in the third period, but the Huskies responded with their backs to the wall, tying the game two and forcing an additional period of sudden death. With 26 seconds left in OT, Northeastern senior defenseman Skylar Fontaine scored the game-winning goal to advance the Huskies to the national title game.
Fontaine had the most NCAA Championship points this year, with five (3 goals, 2 assists). Her semifinal victory saw her eclipse the program record for most points for a defender with 122.
Frankel earned his 20th net win for the Huskies, who lead the country. She also ranks first in the NCAA for goals against average, save percentage, shutouts and goalie winning percentage.
While Northeastern will play in uncharted waters, Wisconsin are used to the scene they face on Saturday night. The Badgers play in a seventh straight Frozen Four record and make their ninth domestic title game.
Wisconsin advanced to the championship game with a 4-2 victory over Ohio State in the semifinals. The Badgers pounced on the Buckeyes with a goal just over a minute into the game and took a 3-0 lead halfway through the second period.
Watts scored a semifinal goal – her 17th, which ties her to No. 1 in the NCAA. She ranks second in the country for points (34) and fifth with 17 assists.
