The Columbus Blue Jackets had good news as one of their best defensemen, Zach Werenski, was activated out of the injured reserve. The 23-year-old blue player has missed the last three games since sustaining a lower-body injury Feb.4 against the Dallas Stars. To make room for Werenski, Columbus placed third-string goalkeeper Matiss Kivlenieks in the injured reserve.
Werenski is expected to help bolster the team’s blue line, which has given up 12 goals in three missed games, including a pair of five-goal games. Fortunately for Columbus, the Blue Jackets went 2-1 during that time. Werenski has averaged 24:09 of ice time this season and has one goal and three assists, well below his offensive numbers after scoring 20 goals a season ago. Kivlenieks had served as Joonas Korpisalo’s replacement with Elvis Merzlikins on the injured reserve.
