– I can only repeat that I had no doubt that Mariann wanted to die and also expressed it in her own way. There is absolutely no doubt. But it is clear that she did not have the language to put it into words, said Ebbe Preisler in a court hearing on Saturday, according to Danish TV2.
Mariann Preisler (80) was found lifeless in a nursing home in Frederiksberg on Wednesday this week. The husband, Ebbe Preisler (81), was later arrested and charged with murder.
– I asked her if she thought it was today, and she blinked and said yes, Preisler said.
Wrote about dying together
Mariann and Ebbe have previously written a chronicle about a wish to die together at a self-selected time, and conducted several interviews about active euthanasia active euthanasia Active euthanasia is when a doctor kills or helps to kill a person at the person’s request. This is illegal in Norway, but allowed in Belgium, Canada, Spain and the Netherlands, among others. in Denmark.
On the bedside table in the room where Mariann was found was a farewell letter that the accused had written on behalf of both of them, according to Extra Magazine. He himself was found unconscious and hospitalized, but survived.

Mariann Preisler had Parkinson’s disease and was demented. According to the prosecutor, there is currently nothing in the case to indicate consent on her part.
But in court, Ebbe insisted that he had her consent:
– I didn’t have a moment’s doubt, and after all I’ve been around her for 55 years, so I know quite a bit about her reactions. I would argue that there was good clarity, he said, according to Danish TV2.
The judge in the case justified the remand by saying that there is reason to suspect that Ebbe Preisler is guilty of murder.
She assumes that Mariann has been unable to express a wish to be killed, and that Ebbe was aware of his wife’s condition.
The brother: – Had hoped it was successful
Ebbe Preisler will be remanded in custody in Vestre Prison, defense lawyer Knud Meden tells Danish TV2.
– We had probably hoped for a release due to the completely personal and special circumstances. But now the court believes that the case should be investigated further. We hope for a good result in the end, when the police have finished, said Moen.
During the court session, Ebbe’s brother, Jan Preisler, stated that he is sorry that his brother, who himself tried to commit suicide, now has to go through a legal process and detention against his will.
– We are some who had hoped that his suicide was successful. That’s how it is, he said.
When asked by Danish TV2 about what it was like to see his brother in court, he replies:
– I think he looked tired, but he is who he is. We are affected, the whole family.
– Could see that he suffered from it
The couple’s son, Jonas Preisler, says that he and the family have no doubt that it was the parents’ joint decision to commit suicide. He says he believes his father’s choice was made with love.
– I could see that it hurt him. I could actually see that he was suffering from what he feels he has inflicted on the rest of us, where about what it was like to see his father in court.
The prosecutor in the case, Emilie Andersen, calls it a “sad case”, according to Danish TV2 – but says she still believes detention is the right thing to do.
– After all, it is still a serious crime when the charge is for murder, regardless of the fact that there are of course some sad circumstances in this case, which clearly apply.
Splits the Folketing
It is the family that themselves wanted the names to be public in this case, says defense attorney Meden earlier pronounced.
The case comes in the middle of a debate about active euthanasia, which has raged in Denmark for many months.
In May this year, a so-called citizens’ proposal to make active euthanasia legal in Denmark received 50,000 signatures, and the Folketing is thus obliged to deal with it.
The government has appointed a committee tasked with investigating the possibilities for a dignified death. The final decision on the proposal to allow active euthanasia will be made next year.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wants to allow it, but the proposal divides both the party internally and the politicians in the Folketing, writes Jutland Posten.
In October, a whopping 72 per cent responded yes to making active euthanasia legal in a survey for Denmark’s radio.
