A recent medical study revealed the benefit of eating strawberries regularly on cognitive functions, blood pressure, and increased antioxidant capacity.
“Eating strawberries daily may improve cognitive function in older adults, as well as lower blood pressure and increase antioxidant capacity,” said Dr. Shereen Houshmand, the study’s lead researcher and professor in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at the University of San Diego in California.
She added, “This is an important preventative measure for various chronic diseases. The study findings add to previous research that has confirmed the cardiovascular, metabolic and cognitive health benefits of strawberry consumption.”
What are the most prominent findings of the study about the benefits of eating strawberries?
• The study, whose results were published in the Journal of Nutrition, showed that participants who consumed approximately 26 grams of strawberries, or two servings per day, increased their cognitive processing speed by 5.2 percent.
• Systolic blood pressure decreased by 3.6 percent, total antioxidant capacity jumped by 10.2 percent, and waist circumference decreased by 1.1 percent.
• Strawberries contain many bioactive compounds, in addition to providing 100 percent of the daily vitamin C needs.
• Fruit is also a source of heart-healthy nutrients such as folic acid, potassium, fiber and polyphenols.
• Previous clinical trials have linked strawberry consumption to improvements in several markers of cardiovascular disease, including lower total and LDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
