“Eating Full-Fat Yogurt May Help Lower Blood Sugar in Prediabetic Adults”

Eating 2% to 5% fat yogurt daily may help lower fasting glucose levels in middle-aged and older people with prediabetes, according to a new study from scientists at the University of Vermont in the US. Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated but have not yet reached the level of type 2 diabetes.

The study involved volunteers with prediabetes aged 45 to 75 years. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group ate about 500 grams of normal-fat yogurt each day, while the second group ate only fat-free yogurt.

At the end of the experiment scientists have discoveredthat the group that ate yogurt with fat had an average fasting glucose level of 97.7 milligrams per deciliter. This value is within the normal range.

“This study is part of a growing body of evidence that conflicts with current national and international health authorities’ nutritional recommendations for choosing low-fat dairy products over normal-fat dairy products. We hope that this pilot trial will serve as a stimulus for further research that will help elucidate the reasons for the relationship between dairy fat intake and blood glucose control,” said Dr. Victoria Taormina, lead author of the study.

Previously, scientists from the University of Maine (USA) and the University of South Australia found that consumption of natural yogurt unsupplemented helps lower blood pressure in older adults with hypertension.
