Eating Breakfast before 8 a.m. Reduces Risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Study Finds

Eating breakfast before 8 a.m. can help prevent type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. If you eat breakfast at nine o’clock, your risk of infection increases by 56 percent.

Type 2 diabetes affects about 3.7 million people in France. The disease can lead to serious complications, hence the importance of early detection. This chronic disease appears after insulin resistance, which prevents the body from using glucose as an energy source. The latter accumulates in the blood and leads to a rise in sugar, according to a website published Topsante.

Diabetes is often linked to a diet with a high intake of refined carbohydrates such as sugar found in flour, white bread and pasta, sugary drinks such as fruit juices and soft drinks, and foods rich in carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice and corn.

Food control is just as important as meal timing, which can reduce risk, according to a recent study. After following up on 100,000 people in France, researchers found that eating breakfast before eight in the morning could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Researcher and study leader Ana Palomar Cruz said, “We know that meal timing plays an important role in regulating the circadian rhythm and controlling glucose and lipids. However, few studies have examined the relationship between meal timing or fasting and diabetes.”

In the details of the study, the participants were asked to fill out food records online that show what they ate and drank over the course of 24 hours over 3 non-consecutive days, in addition to recording the timing of meals.

The team of researchers monitored the health of the participants over 7 years.

Eat your last meal at seven o’clock

The study recorded 963 new cases of diabetes during the follow-up, and it was found that the risk of developing the disease (by 56 percent) was higher for people who ate their morning meals after 9 am compared to people who ate their breakfast before 8 am.

Biologically, skipping breakfast affects glucose and lipid control, as well as insulin levels.

Accordingly, the researchers found that delaying dinner until after ten increases the risk, while eating frequently (5 times a day) is associated with a lower incidence of the disease. Also, fasting can only be beneficial if breakfast is taken at an early hour before eight in the morning and dinner early.

The results of the study showed that eating the first meal at eight in the morning and the last meal before seven in the evening helps to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
