Apples contain many vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances. The Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE) lists, among other things Vitamin C – an apple (100 grams) contains around 12 milligrams of the vitamin. The substance is important so that the body can build connective tissue and absorb iron.
The fruit is also particularly rich in fiberwhich promote digestion, as well as Potassium and calcium. And apples included Vitamin Awhich is required, among other things, for the visual process. By the way: The variety and color of the apple slightly influence the nutrient content.
So there are many reasons to eat an apple every now and then – but should you do it every day? What’s really true about the old saying.
Eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away – really?
ÖKO-TEST asked the German Nutrition Society (DGE) what they thought about eating apples every day. “The saying ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is more of a metaphor for a plant-based diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables, in as colorful a mix as possible,” explains press officer Silke Restemeyer.
“So it’s not the apple alone that replaces the ‘doctor’, but one A balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables promotes health and protects against diet-related diseases.” The DGE recommends that At least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day to be consumed – preferably with as much variety as possible.
Eating apples is healthy – and can prevent illness
“In terms of the content of secondary plant substances, the apple is definitely valuable, but it is more in the middle range,” says Restemeyer. Nevertheless, there can be benefits to eating apples regularly.
Due to a relatively high polyphenol content, regular apple consumption could potentially contribute to this Risk of lung or colon cancer to become ill, to decrease. In an apple, the substances would be located directly under the peel. Raw, unpeeled apples would therefore contain a particularly high amount – followed by naturally cloudy direct apple juice.
