Huge shock moment for the holiday passengers of an Easyjet machine. On the way to Menorca, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing by Spanish fighter jets on Sunday.
As can be seen on a Twitter video, F-18 fighter jets suddenly appear next to the Easyjet machine on the flight from London to the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca. A fighter jet waves its wings at the holiday flier, ordering it to follow. The two jets then escorted the plane to its destination, the island’s capital airport.
According to the “Bild” newspaper, a bomb threat was received against the machine. A police spokesman confirmed this. One had been “alert about a bomb threat on an airplane”.
Bomb threaten is a British star student
As reported by the British “Daily Mail” on Wednesday, the bomb threat is said to have come from Aditya V.* (18). “I’m blowing up this plane, I’m a Taliban,” he is said to have posted on the social media platform Snapchat. He himself was on board the plane with friends.
As the newspaper goes on to write, V.* is said to be the son of a doctor from the city of Kent. He is also said to be highly intelligent – ten years ago he represented England at the World Youth Chess Championships and finished fourth there. Four more championships followed.
Aditya V. wants to study economics at university and is said to have been offered a place at Cambridge. Provided he achieves the required grades in his A levels. He recently completed a prestigious month-long internship at investment bank JPMorgan; before that he had done a similar internship at HSBC.
He cannot leave Spain
But last night everything turned out differently for the high-flyer: He was on trial in Spain, where a public prosecutor demanded that he pay for the £86,000 cost of the action. He also faces a criminal conviction and a four-figure bill for the police and Ministry of Defense, according to the Daily Mail.
Should he be convicted, it could affect his ambitions to study at Cambridge – it is mandatory to notify the university of any unserved conviction and any terrorist offense will be included on a list of the most serious offences.
His lawyer told the judge that V. explained the bad joke by saying that his friends often called him “Taliban” because of his dark skin color and his Asian origins. His mother also emphasized: “It was a joke.”
After the prosecutor’s hearing, the judge decided to set bail at £8,600 – a tenth of the amount he may be charged. He also banned the British teenager from leaving Spain and ordered him to report to the court every two weeks. (chs)
