Clouds, sun, rain: The weather at Easter in northern Germany is particularly changeable. Today, Easter Sunday, it will be very cloudy in many places and significantly cooler than on Holy Saturday.
A change of sun and clouds moved across the north on Holy Saturday. The weather service spoke of “unusually mild” temperatures, reaching up to 22 degrees in some places. According to forecasts by NDR weather expert Stefan Kreibohm, today it will be “generally quite nice. Sun and clouds alternate.” It is expected to remain mostly dry then – but showers are possible. Things should stay friendly for longer, especially in southern Lower Saxony. On Sunday and Monday, the Sahara dust will reach Lower Saxony in the western parts of the country, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). The result, according to the DWD, is an orange-brown cloudy sky until Monday.
Monday the weather will be rather unstable
On Monday a small depression will move over the north, with clouds and rain, which can sometimes be heavy. “Lower Saxony in particular will probably be affected by this, perhaps also Hamburg and West Mecklenburg. And things will generally cool down a bit again,” Kreibohm continued.

History: Easter weather usually offers a little bit of everything
Basically, the Easter weather has always been very different in the past: from constant rain to heavy thunderstorms, storms and snowfall to almost mid-summer temperatures, everything was there. The main reason for this is the fluctuating calendar date for Easter – which always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the beginning of spring. The earliest Easter Sunday is March 22nd and the latest is April 25th.
For example, according to Jörg Kachelmann’s weather channel, Hamburg had the warmest Easter Sunday in its history in 1952 (April 13th) with 26 degrees, and the coldest in 1964 (March 29th) with just 2 degrees. According to mv-wetter.com, Warnemünde recorded -2 degrees on Easter Monday 2008 (March 24th), and in 2018 there was 15 centimeters of snow on Easter Sunday (April 1st).
