Captain Dimitar Burlakov, a Bessarabian Bulgarian captured by Russian forces in Ukraine, has been released. The news was confirmed by his family to BTV.
The military man of Bulgarian origin was exchanged for Russian prisoners and is now in a military hospital in Ukraine.
His family describes the incident as an “Easter miracle.”
Dimitar Burlakov, the brother of Raina Mandjukova, the former head of the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, survived after his MI-8 helicopter was shot down by a Russian missile near Mariupol and taken prisoner.
Today, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian forces control Mariupol. The head of state ordered the attack on the industrial zone of Azovstal – the last Ukrainian bastion in the strategic port of Mariupol – to be canceled. Putin explained that his decision was aimed at saving the lives of the Russian military.
