The Peace Forum invited to the traditional protest marches. The participants call for peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

Around 1,000 people took part in the final rally of the traditional Easter march in downtown Bremen. Around 90 participants attended in Bremerhaven. That’s what the police say.

Demonstration train and rally

The Bremen Peace Forum had called for the protest marches. The war in Ukraine plays the biggest role this year. The core demands are: “Diplomacy instead of escalation! Diplomats instead of grenades! For peace and climate protection!”

In Bremen, the Easter March started at the Peace Tunnel. After the demonstration through the city center, the theologian Eugen Drewermann spoke on the market square. The procession through Bremerhaven’s city center began in front of the Great Church. The final rally took place at the Roter Sand.

Criticism of demands for peace negotiations

In contrast to last year, the organizers of the Bremen Peace Forum are not calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine this year. Instead, they plead for an end to the fighting and for peace negotiations. Therefore, for the first time, the German Trade Union Confederation in Bremen, the Bremen Left and the SPD did not call for participation in the Easter marches.

Demands for peace negotiations are always viewed critically. There are also different opinions within the peace movement. Among other things, it is feared that in such negotiations concessions would have to be made to Russia, which attacked Ukraine in violation of international law. Experts also warn against right-wing extremists infiltrating the peace marches.
