A 32-year-old Briton who stole about 200,000 chocolate eggs from the English town of Telford a few weeks before Easter at the beginning of this year has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison. The judge has ruled that, reports the British news agency PA. Half of the prison sentence is suspended.
According to the court, the man had stolen a truck trailer containing the sweets. A few months before he had already stolen a truck tractor, which he attached to the trailer.
The Cadbury Creme eggs had a combined value of more than 31,000 pounds, the equivalent of more than 35,000 euros. It is unclear what the man wanted with the eggs. He has been in jail for some time.
‘Very serious act’
The Briton used a grinder to get into the SW Group Logistics company, where the eggs were stored. Then he left with the trailer full of chocolate. Officers saw the man driving on the highway. He quickly surrendered to the officers.
The man has admitted that he is behind the theft, and also that he caused damage to the property and was behind the wheel without insurance.
According to the court, the man is guilty of a “very serious act”. His lawyer argued that the man was struggling with setbacks, such as a breakup and the loss of work. As a result, he turned to alcohol and drugs. According to his counsel, the egg thief regrets the deed.
