‘Easter egg protest’ against coup in Myanmar

In Myanmar, protesters are demonstrating with painted eggs against the military coup this Easter. Protesters take to the streets with eggs bearing texts such as “Spring Revolution” and “We Will Conquer”. They also carry eggs painted with a hand with three raised fingers, a recurring symbol of rebellion from the book and film series. The Hunger Games.

In several cities, activists have left painted eggs at their neighbors’ doors or in bags on their fences. “I’m a Buddhist, but I’m part of this campaign because it’s easy to get eggs. It took me almost an hour to paint my eggs,” a protester in Yangon told the British newspaper. The Guardian.

The country has been in the grip of the coup since February 1 by the army leadership, which has deposed elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and is now using force to keep power. Meanwhile, more than 550 people have been killed at the demonstrations, including by soldiers who fired live at crowds. About 3,000 protesters have been imprisoned.

Creative protests

The Easter egg protest is not the first creative act of the Myanmar protesters. Earlier they organized a flower protest, in which they placed flowers in places where protesters have been shot. Also, in contrast to the many noise protests, they recently held a silent protest. In addition, people stayed at home en masse, so that the streets in some cities were virtually deserted.

Facebook is calling for this Easter Sunday to respectfully deal with the Christian traditions of believing Myanmareese. Catholic support is also heard for the protesters. Cardinal Bo, the archbishop of Yangon, in an Easter message cheered the protesters: “Jesus is resurrected. Hallelujah, Myanmar will also be resurrected,” he writes on Twitter.
