East Java Sees Spike in Dengue Fever Cases, Urgent Measures Needed

Cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in East Java have increased in the last 2 months. Data from the East Java Health Service revealed that from January 2024 to the third week of February, 3,638 cases were reported to have been recorded in various areas of East Java.

The highest dengue fever is in Probolinggo Regency, around 600 cases. Meanwhile in the city of Surabaya, around 30 cases were reported. “There is a phase where dengue fever increases. So, if currently Probolinggo is the most populous, this must be evaluated and mitigated next year. due to regional changes. “Because usually the most dengue fever is in Nganjuk,” said Deputy Chair of Commission E of the East Java DPRD, Hikmah Bafaqih, Tuesday (5/3/2024).

This PKB politician added that dengue cases must be treated immediately, because they are at risk of death. “Treatment for dengue fever requires at least hospitalization. So, currently it is known that type A hospitals are full, therefore my suggestion is that type B hospitals do not easily provide referrals to type A. The aim is to avoid queues. “I think that for dengue treatment, type B hospitals can still do it,” he explained.

Hikmah said that the next effort that must be made is to mitigate the spread of dengue cases so that it is more controlled. According to him, flood disasters and the rainy season could also be one of the causes of dengue fever.

“Therefore, I urge the public to maintain cleanliness and puddles of water. “Because usually this puddle of water is a place for mosquito larvae to develop,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Section of the East Java Provincial Health Office, Sulvy Dwi Anggraini, said that with the high number of dengue fever cases at the beginning of this year, it is not impossible that it could be like last year. In 2023, 9,041 cases of dengue fever will be reported in one year.

“If it was predicted, for example three times, it would have been more than 9,000. “So, at least it could be almost the same or could exceed the case in 2023,” he explained.

According to Sulvy, so far one of the areas with relatively high dengue cases is Probolinggo Regency, with around 600 cases reported. Meanwhile in the city of Surabaya, around 30 cases were reported.

“For Surabaya, thank God, it is still under control compared to several districts/cities where there are quite a lot of cases. “But, there has started to be an increase,” said Sulvy.

Seeing the increasing trend in cases, people in East Java are asked to make efforts to prevent disease caused by the virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Sulvy appealed to the public to intensify the eradication of mosquito nests (PSN), including through the 3M Plus movement.

The public is asked to routinely drain or clean water reservoirs and close them. Apart from that, recycle or clean items that have the potential to become mosquito nests. The community can also carry out various other preventive measures, such as sprinkling Abate. [geh.dre]
