East Java Polio National Immunization Week (PIN) Targets 4.4 Million Children

Surabaya – In order to break the chain of spread of polio in East Java, Polio National Immunization Week (PIN) was held. The first round of PIN Polio in East Java started last Monday (15/1).

This Polio PIN is implemented as per the letter from the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number: IM.02.03/Menkes/1051/2023 dated 29 December 2023 regarding the Implementation of Sub PIN in the context of Controlling the cVDPV2 Polio Outbreak.

According to the data collected detikJatim from the East Java Provincial Health Service, at least 1,168,443 children aged 0-7 years have received the novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) immunization. This achievement has reached 26.3% of the 4,437,679 children targeted for this immunization.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said that this polio immunization week was held simultaneously for 2 rounds. The first round will take place on 15-21 January 2024 and the second round will take place on 19-25 February 2024.

Khofifah said that this immunization activity must be carried out in 3 provinces because a number of cases of acute flaccid paralysis (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) or known as AFP were found which were triggered by Type Two Polio Virus, including in East Java, including in the Sampang and Pamekasan areas.

“The Indonesian Ministry of Health calls on the Central Java, East Java and DI Yogyakarta Provincial Health Services to implement Sub PIN simultaneously starting January 15 2024,” said Khofifah, Tuesday (16/1/2024).

Polio immunization is mandatory for children aged 0-7 years because polio is an infectious disease that can be prevented by immunization.

“If the polio virus enters the body of a child who has not received immunization, the virus will very easily develop in the digestive tract and attack the child’s nervous system, causing paralysis,” he said.

The symptoms of polio include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness in the neck and pain in the legs. The incubation period for the Polio Virus takes around 3-6 days, then paralysis will occur within 7-21 days.

“If you encounter these symptoms, immediately check yourself at the nearest health service facility,” stressed Khofifah.

To obtain effective results in preventing and controlling polio in East Java, Khofifah also asked the East Java Health Service to coordinate with the Health Service in each district/city to carry out a rapid response to polio disease surveillance.
