East Java Police Asked to Arrest Thugs Like in Tanjung Priok

Surabaya, CNN Indonesia

The National Police Headquarters instructs the ranks of the Regional Police throughout Indonesia, including: East Java Police to apprehend the perpetrators of extortion and similar acts of thuggery at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta.

Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Headquarters Inspector General Pol Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said the instruction was given after President Joko Widodo ordered the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to take action against thugs who harassed container truck drivers at Tanjung Priok Port.

“The National Police finally gave directives to all ranks in Indonesia to carry out operations against extortion and thuggery in Indonesia,” said Argo, at the East Java Police Headquarters, Surabaya, Friday (11/6).

He explained that in Tanjung Priok, Polda Metro Jaya has arrested approximately 49 perpetrators, who are suspected of committing extortion against container drivers.

The modus operandi of these thugs is to yell at or quote container drivers who deliver goods to Tanjung Priok Port. The amount of money demanded varies.

“On entry quoted [dipalak]. When the survey is also quoted. Then when unloading the container is also quoted. Car wash was also quoted. When leaving the company it was also quoted. The variation in the quotation is between Rp. 2,000 to Rp. 20,000,” he said.

For this reason, he said, the National Police Chief had instructed his staff at the East Java Regional Police to carry out similar thuggery operations not only at ports but also in other public places.

“We have also sent it to the Polda-Polda, the East Java Police have also received the letter so that later they can act immediately,” he said.

Previously, the North Jakarta Metro Police moved quickly to apprehend dozens of people who are suspected of often committing acts of burglary at Tanjung Priok Port.

This arrest was a follow-up to President Jokowi’s instructions to the National Police Chief to take action against thugs who demanded money from container truck drivers.

Jokowi also admitted that he received information about this burglary during a dialogue with the drivers in Tanjung Priok.

“When there is a traffic jam, there are a lot of drivers who are attacked by thugs. Please solve this,” said Jokowi when he called Listyo, broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube channel, Thursday (10/6).
