East Java Pasuruan Regency Government Accelerates PMK Handling

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,PASURUAN — The government of Pasuruan Regency, East Java, is accelerating the handling of the mouth and nail disease (PMK) epidemic that continues to spread in the local district by providing medicines, vaccines and vitamins to farm animals exposed to FMD.

Pasuruan Regent Irsyad Yusuf said that currently a number of livestock in Pasuruan Regency were exposed to the FMD virus. “We also ask the central government to immediately provide assistance with medicines, vitamins and vaccines for treatment PMK considering the dairy cattle population in Pasuruan Regency is the largest in East Java, which contributes up to 30 percent,” he said, Tuesday (7/6/2022).

He said the population of dairy cattle in Pasuruan Regency reached 97,101 heads spread over several sub-districts such as Lumbang, Puspo, Grati, Tutur, Purwodadi, Lekok and Nguling sub-districts. Of this number, he said, the number of dairy cows infected with FMD was 205 heads and 10 of them died.

Although the number of dead dairy cows is small, it can be dangerous if not handled immediately because the dairy cow pens are livestock dense. “Just imagine that one cage can hold 3-10 cows. This can be said to be densely packed with cattle. If it’s not handled immediately, it’s dangerous because the infection could spread more and more,” said the Regent.

In addition to the 30 percent of the largest dairy cattle population in East Java, he continued, Pasuruan Regency is an area with very strategic economic potential because there are many dairy processing industries (IPS) which are very dependent on the presence of these dairy cows.

He hoped that the central government would immediately distribute the aid for medicines, vitamins and vaccines to Pasuruan Regency. “From the East Java Provincial Government, there are already few, but there are few, because it may also be shared with all outbreak areas and infected in East Java. We can also understand but hopefully Pasuruan Regency will be a priority,” he said.

So far, the supply of medicines and vitamins in Pasuruan Regency has started to run low. By sending the aid, at least it really helps officers to immediately handle sick or potentially infected cows. “The sooner the better, because the supply of medicines and vitamins for cows is also running low,” he said.
