East Flanders public prosecutor’s office warns about the drug ‘Monkey Dust’: 8 suspects arrested, toddler tests positive for hard drugs

What is Monkey Dust?

Monkey Dust is a synthetic designer drug. These drugs imitate the effects of, say, ecstasy or cocaine, but are several times more powerful and dangerous. ‘Monkey Dust’ is a derivative of the chemical substance cathinone. Flakka, also known as the ‘zombie drug’, also belongs to the same family of synthetic drugs. The drug is banned in Belgium

The drug is not new in our country, and its name changes regularly. In the United States, the drug is known as ‘bath salts’ because of its shape. The drug can come in powder or crystal form, and is smoked, snorted or injected.

The public prosecutor’s office warns of the harmful effects of the drug. After ingestion, users may become very aggressive, experience hallucinations or even spasms. “We see that this drug has serious consequences for people who become addicted to it,” the public prosecutor’s office responds. “Even with limited use, this drug can cause significant damage to mental and physical health in the short term.”
