Easee Charging Stations Banned from Sale in the Netherlands and Sweden: What You Need to Know

Home charging station maker Easee confirms that it is no longer allowed to sell charging stations in the Netherlands. A Swedish safety authority previously indicated that the earth leakage circuit breaker would not comply with European legislation. The Dutch RDI is taking over this decision, says Easee to Tweakers.

It concerns both the Easee Home and the Easee Charge that may no longer be sold in the Netherlands, the company reports. These are the two models that Easee sold. The company says it is in contact with the National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate, or RDI, ‘and we are now investigating the possibilities’. The RDI has not said that chargers already sold must be modified. The sales ban does not apply to Belgium. Seventeen thousand Easee chargers have been installed in the Netherlands.

The Elsäkerhetsverket, the Swedish electrical safety authority, announced in mid-March after its own investigation that the Easee charging points in Sweden may no longer be sold. The Easee charging points use an electrical earth leakage circuit breaker and not an electromechanical one. As a result, there would be a risk that the earth leakage circuit breaker will not always operate, according to an inspector from the authority.

The Swedish safety authority says that the Easee charging points can still be used ‘with some vigilance’. However, according to the authority, the company must adjust the charging points to ensure that they comply with the law. Easee says it believes its products are “among the safest on the market today and that all our users can charge in complete safety.” “Safety and innovation have been the main focus points within Easee from the start,” says the company.

The company says it will appeal against the decision of the Swedish authority. Several charging station sellers already said that a Dutch sales ban was also coming, according to a forum topic on Tweakers. However, Easee had not yet confirmed this. After Sweden, the Netherlands is the second country to ban the sale of charging points. The Easee charging points support 1- and 3-phase charging, charging up to 22kW and have an app to set charging time and power.
