The northernmost island in Greenland

A new piece of land was found off the coast of Greenland. Scientists believe that it appeared as a result of a shift in the pack passages.

Researchers accidentally discovered a new island off the coast of Greenland and claim that this is the northernmost point of land in the world. Writes about it The Guardian.

“We were not going to discover a new island. We just went there to collect samples,” said Morten Rush, head of the research center at the Arctic station in Greenland.

The island is located 780 meters to the northwest. It is small – only 30 meters in diameter and consists of sea silt and moraine.

Experts point out that the emergence of land is not a consequence of global warming.

“It meets the criteria for an island. It is currently the northernmost land in the world,” the scientists concluded, adding that such islands often appear and disappear.

Recall that recently, at the mouth of the Danube near Kiliya, thanks to natural channel processes that affect the formation of the river bottom relief, two new islands were formed.
