Earth’s day can be an hour longer due to the distance of the moon

New research has shown that days on Earth are getting longer as the Moon gradually moves away from our planet, Zakon.kz reports.

Writing about this Daily Mail with reference to recent observations by scientists who have discovered that as the moon moves away, its gravitational influence on the Earth changes and slows down the rotation of our planet, and that is why the length of the Earth’s day is gradually increasing.

“Scientists suggest that the day on our planet could eventually be longer and it will not be 24 hours, but 25. This will take about 200 million years,” the publication reports.

Professor Stephen Meyers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison explains that as the Moon moves away, the Earth becomes like a skater that slows down its rotation by ‘ extending his arms.

“Previous studies have shown that the satellite is moving away from Earth by about 1.5 inches per year. At some point, the moon will reach a constant speed and will only be visible from one side of our planet,” said the professor

He remembers that 1.4 billion years ago, a day on Earth lasted only about 18 hours. In addition, the days were shorter mainly because the moon was closer to our planet.

The scientist emphasizes that the changes are happening so slowly that humanity does not notice them, and the increase in time to date is so small that it is not yet affecting the circadian rhythms of earthlings.

On August 14, 2024, astronomers reported a massive explosion that occurred on the Sun. Earthlings have been warned about the threat of new magnetic storms.
