Earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 in Groningen

There was an earthquake in Groningen last night, with a magnitude of 2.0. According to the KNMI, the epicenter of the quake was near the village of Loppersum.

The quake was at a depth of 3 kilometers around 1:30 am. It is the first quake in Groningen this month.

In the first instance KNMI said the earthquake had a magnitude of 2.1 and that the epicenter was near the village of Eenum. That information was later adjusted by the KNMI.

In May, the KNMI registered six quakes, with a magnitude ranging from 0.3 to 1.4. The earthquakes in the region are caused by years of gas extraction.
