In the area of the landfill, which is considered closed, tremors with a magnitude of 3.1 were recorded.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 occurred in the northeast of the DPRK in the Kilju county, where the Phungeri nuclear test site is located. This was announced on Friday, February 11, by the press service of the South Korean Meteorological Administration.
According to her, the tremors were recorded at 10:35 (03:35 Kyiv time) at a depth of 17 km. It is noted that the earthquake was caused by natural tectonic processes, and not by the explosion of a nuclear device.
The area has experienced 25 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater since 1978, according to the Meteorological Administration. The most powerful of them with a magnitude of 3.2 was recorded on September 23, 2017.
In total, six nuclear explosions were carried out at the test site in 2006-2017. According to seismic stations, the first of them was carried out under the Paektusan volcano, the rest – in the tunnels under the Mantapsan mountain. The landfill was closed in 2018 as a gesture of goodwill from the North Korean authorities. However, the media later reported that North Korea halts dismantling of missile test site.
