Jakarta –
Capital New Zealand, Wellington, was shaken by a strong earthquake on Wednesday (15/2). Local residents reported feeling a sudden jolt and buildings shaking.
Reported by the news agency AFPWednesday (15/2/2023), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported earthquake it had a magnitude (M) of 5.7, with its epicenter in the Cook Strait between the country’s two main islands.
New Zealand’s Civil Defense Agency gives different figures from the USGS report.
“Major shaking there! Earthquake Magnitude 6.0, depth 57 km, 50 km northwest of Paraparaumu was felt widely on the North Island,” New Zealand’s Civil Defense agency said.
There have been no reports of damage, and no tsunami warning has been issued.
However, residents report feeling the ground shake for 10-20 seconds, likening it to a convoy of giant trucks passing by.
The quake occurred as clean-up efforts were underway after a devastating typhoon, which killed four people and caused widespread damage across the North Island.
“This has been a very stressful time for people — take care of yourself and those around you,” the Civil Defense agency said.
