NEW JERSEY — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 shook New Jersey on Friday, sparking frantic phone calls from Manhattan to Rockland County to Montclair, Brooklyn and Long Island.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred 7 kilometers northeast of the White House station in Hunterdon County.
No injuries were immediately reported. New York’s governor said her team was assessing potential impacts and damage and would provide updates as needed throughout Friday.

It’s not the first earthquake to hit the tri-state area this year. In January, a magnitude 1.7 earthquake struck near Astoria, Queens, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Earthquakes in the New York City area are rare, although they seem increasingly common in recent years.
There are faults in the city, but experts say residents have nothing to fear.
